Insomniac: “The PS3 is easier to Develop for than the PS2″

Nathaniel Bell – Senior Environment Artist for Insomniac Games had a chance to sit down and talk with me at the Triangle Game Conference about what it’s like to develop on the Playstation 3 console.  He has as first hand experience developing environments for several Ratchet and Clank games as well as both Resistance titles for the PS3.

The conclusion that he reached was that because of Insomniac’s amazing engineering teams, and since they make all of their own development tools in house, they as a company have been able to learn from their past experiences and develop new tools to improve on them.  This has led to his job becoming increasingly easier over time to the point where “it would be a nightmare to try to develop without the tools we have now”.  In the end, he just came out and said that he has had nothing but great experience developing solely for the PS3 now, and because of the tools that he has at his disposal, “The PS3 is easier to develop for than the PS2″.

This will hopefully lay to rest all of the arguments about how “hard” it is to develop for the Playstation3.  If you put the time and effort into learning the architecture, then amazing games are possible, as is evident from what Insomniac has released.

Keep checking back for more Triangle Game Conference updates!

Great post, the blog is coming along nicely.

yes with the tools we have.
the ps3 is harder to code for you need to sit down and focous alot of time and people to optimize it.
but with the 360 its there all of it to use with the ps3 its alot more fidily.
thats why alot of devs for Muti plat games use the 360 as its lead console because its quicker and eaiser to port it over to the ps3 instead of using theps3 as the lead.
it takes more time look at KZ2 4 years sunk into that game it takes ages to create the tools and get everything up to speed but when it is boy do you see the difference

Spenok> Your right the article was just to explain how Insomniac as a dev team found out that the ps3, after the hard learning curve, is easyer to dev for than the ps2 was.

which means that Square enix are just a bunch of money making fuc**ng pen pushers who cant be bothered with their customers... cause seriously if the ps2 was so hard to code with and they made what... 2-3 games on it ( BEFORE YOU SCREAM I meant the Final fantasy Teams) and now they are complaining that the ps3 is too hard to code for ?? yeah $quareEnix... I mean FFx and FFXii were gorgeous so...money drives the world people...

ok, where in that article did it say that developing on the ps3 was easier then 360?

your all morons, read the damned article. he was saying that developing for the PS3 is easier then the "PS2" not the "360"

ok insomniac give us some good graphics looking at resistance 1/2 they wearn't very pretty. Lol character models wtf they look like faggots haha resistance is decent but it needs a more intense 1vs 1 good example cod4, halo 3

    *last generation, not last year

What is the importance of this article? It;s not like Insomniac is going to make Wii or Xbox 360 games which by all accounts is even easier to develop for. In fact they didn't make Xbox games or Gamecube games last year and instead made exclusive PS2 games instead. So again, what's the relevance of this other than Insomniac pleading on Sony's behalf to make the PS3 the lead platform and a cry to 3rd party publishers?

This just in! Picking up a 2,500 ton boulder is easier than picking up a 2,600 ton boulder!
  • huh..
This is awesome, seriously. That is also just plain obvious. Of course if you spend time with something it gets easier to develop for, what's the difference. Time. I mean it is obvious, but it doesn't answer anything from what we know before.

Also, how can this answer the question of which system is harder to program for if Insomniac hasn't coded on the 360? It doesn't. It does however just point to the fact that TIME is the factor to learn any type of programming architecture. All of it will be difficult at first, then after time, it obviously becomes easier.

I had to say this because beside the fact, this is just bait to get hits. ;p
